Turmeric in drinks - What are the best-tasting drinks featuring the golden spice?

Turmeric has a huge number of benefits that you’re sure to feel throughout your life the more of it you have. However, what if you wanted to drink your turmeric instead of eating it in curries, or on roasted vegetables? Well, there are recipes out there for you! In this article, we’re going to briefly run through three great ones.

1 - Turmeric Tonic

This recipe is basically a turmeric tea. That said, it is a little more complex than your standard turmeric tea and it has a different flavour too!

To get started, add turmeric, ginger, lemon juice, lemon rind, maple syrup, cayenne, and filtered water to a pot. Bring those ingredients to a simmer (not a boil) for three minutes or so, and then strain and divide between two mugs.

This is a pretty simple recipe, in terms of making it, but the ingredients give it a complex taste and numerous health benefits. Turmeric and ginger go very well together naturally, and both have the traditional benefits of turmeric: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and gentle aid with digestion. To increase the bioavailability of the turmeric, you could replace the cayenne with black pepper. The piperine in the pepper would mean that the turmeric gets absorbed into your body much more easily.

2 - Simple Turmeric Tea

This is a truly simple recipe, and as such it could be good to have in the mornings when you’re still not quite alert enough to crush the day.

Boil roughly half a liter of water in your kettle, and add approximately equal quantities of ground turmeric and freshly grated ginger to a teapot or jug. Add the liquid to the vessel of your choice, and allow it to infuse for around five minutes. Then, strain it and pour it into cups to drink.

This is a very basic recipe, and it’s ideal if you’re a fan of the flavour that turmeric naturally has. The earthy richness is sure to come through and will kick you up a notch on your way into work. If you wanted to sweeten the tea a little, you could add a small amount of honey or maple syrup, which would brighten the overall flavour considerably.

3 - Golden Milk

This is our favorite! It’ is a true staple of hipster cafes the world over. It’s also delicious! Essentially, you take a healthy scoop or two of turmeric powder, and thoroughly mix it into hot milk. The resulting drink is smooth, earthy, rich, and very easy to drink.

There’s a lot of room for changes there, and for example, you could make a change in the traditional direction: use coconut milk instead of cow milk. This results in a much more sweet and decadent flavour, which may be ideal for a particularly bitterly cold morning, there’s nothing better than something which could warm you up and sweeten up your morning too! We swap the honey for agave syrup and also add some ground cinnamon and pepper to our turmeric and coconut milk.
