Oranges have a whole host of properties that make them all the better for you! They’re bursting with vitamin C, which has been scientifically proven to help boost your immunity. If you’re anything like us, you’ll head for a glass of orange juice when you feel a cold coming on, and we stick to that like glue!
Oranges are also full of antioxidants, as well as ascorbic acid and beta-carotene. These things all play important roles in improving your body’s natural defenses when they’re down by fighting free radical activity in your body. Free radical activity can take a toll on immunity, so having an ingredient to combat that will make you feel worlds better.
Black Pepper - Versatile as both a condiment and healthy food.
Black pepper can be a great spice to add to your dishes, we’re the first people to throw it into a meal when it’s starting to taste a little bland! That said, it also has lots of health benefits.
Most impressively, it’s extremely high in antioxidants, which studies have shown can prevent or delay any damaging effects of free radicals in your system.
It also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties! This can be a real godsend if you’ve got a head cold and need something to help reduce the swelling of your sinuses. The piperine in black pepper has also been noticeably effective in reducing the swelling in rats with arthritis.
To sum up, black pepper has many more health benefits than you might expect at first, and therefore, it’s a worthy ingredient in our health shot.
Turmeric - An earthy spice to boost your immunity.
This ingredient may be particularly relevant during flu season when there’s often a few bugs going around.
It is also said to help ease any pain and discomfort that you might be feeling, as well as having powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric tea is a go-to drink in our house when one or both of us is sick, and we find it helps a surprising amount with any mild aches and pains we’re suffering. Therefore, it’s going into our health shot!
Ginger - Super tasty superfood!
Ginger is one of our favorite ingredients, as we often make a lot of curries, and it can heighten the flavors available in the ingredients we pick.
The volatile oils present in ginger have a large number of anti-inflammatory properties which are similar to properties present in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These properties make ginger an excellent remedy for flu, headaches, and menstrual pains. It’s going into our health shot!
If you’ve got all of those ingredients together, it’s as simple as placing them all into a blender and blending for thirty seconds or so. Feel free to play around with the ratios until you find a flavor you particularly like, and drink some whenever you’re feeling a little under the weather. You could even freeze a small batch to break out the next time you have a cold! We use fresh Jaffa oranges, turmeric powder (when fresh isn't to hand), fresh ginger and hand grounded black pepper to make our health juice.
